How to calculate your age

Step 1: Enter your date of birth

Type a date directly (DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY depending on your locale) or click the calendar icon to pick one. The default is January 1, 2000; overwrite it with your own birth date. Any value from January 1, 0001 up to today is accepted.

Step 2: Add a birth time (optional)

If you know the hour and minute you were born, type it into the Birth Time field. Leaving it blank is fine, and the calculator simply skips the hours and minutes breakdown. Filling it in unlocks exact hours and minutes alive, computed from midnight of your birth date plus the time you entered.

Step 3: Pick a reference date

The Age on field defaults to today's date so you see your age right now. Change it to any date after your birthday to see how old you'll be then, which helps when you're planning a 30th, a 50th, or a 10,000-days-alive party.

Step 4: Press Calculate Age

The result panel appears below the button with your age headline, a grid of alternative views (years-months-days, total weeks, total hours, etc.), and the number of days until your next birthday. Change any input and press Calculate again to refresh.

Reset to defaults

The circular arrow next to the reference date resets the form: birth date goes back to January 1, 2000, birth time is cleared, and the reference date snaps to today.

How age is actually calculated

Age sounds simple. Subtract the dates. It gets tricky the moment you notice that months have different lengths and leap years exist. We use the standard calendar-age method:

1. Start with reference year − birth year.
2. If the reference month/day is earlier in the year than the birth month/day, subtract one year (because the birthday hasn't happened yet in the reference year).
3. Compute the leftover months by comparing reference month to birth month, borrowing from years where needed.
4. Compute the leftover days using the length of the previous month in the reference year, which handles leap Februaries and 30-vs-31-day months correctly.

So someone born on July 4, 2002 evaluated on April 24, 2026 is 23 years, 9 months and 20 days old, not 24, because July 4 hasn't arrived in 2026 yet. Total days, weeks, hours and minutes are computed separately by taking the straight millisecond difference between the two timestamps.

When to use an age calculator

Official forms, visa applications, insurance, health assessments and school enrollments often ask for your age on a specific date, not today. Setting the reference date to that exact day gives you a precise, unambiguous number.

Planning milestone birthdays

Want to throw a 10,000-days-alive party? A "half-birthday"? A celebration on the day you hit 1 billion seconds alive (roughly 31.7 years)? Set the reference date forward until the total-days or total-hours figure hits your target.

Pet and project ages

The calculator doesn't care whether the birth date belongs to a person, a dog, a car or a codebase. Use it to find the exact age of a pet for vet records, the running time of a project, or how long ago a product launched.

Tips & tricks

• Don't guess the birth time unless you know it. The hours-and-minutes figures are only meaningful if the time is real. Leave the field blank otherwise, since the day-level answer is already very precise.
• Use a future reference date. Want to know your age on your next work anniversary or the day your kid starts school? Type that date into the reference field.
• Share the weekday fact. The "Born on a …" line is the kind of trivia people love to learn and rarely know off the top of their head.
• Check leap-year birthdays carefully. If your birthday is February 29, the next-birthday countdown in non-leap years targets March 1 as the closest celebration date, so adjust to February 28 if you prefer.
